Sun Burn Treatment

Sunburn is the result of the overexposure of the skin to the suns harsh ultraviolet (UVA and UVB) rays. When the skin is exposed directly to the sun it produces a substance called melanin. Melanin is the element that protects the skin and gives us our coloring, and the UV rays are what stimulate the production of melanin. Therefore it is obvious to state that the longer the skin is exposed to the sun the darker tanned it becomes. Sometimes the body cannot produce enough melanin to protect the skin, instead the UV rays are absorbed and the skin is burned. Sunburn is result of the destruction of the skins outer layer (epidermis). The skin becomes red, tender and swollen. The skin has a stinging sensation and in severe burns blistering can occur. Some people may experience a fever as well. After several days the skin will eventually peel and the skin beneath the dead layer has renewed itself. Regular overexposure to the sun ages the skin rapidly causing premature sagging, wrinkling, wart like bumps and the skin has a leathery appearance. The worst of all cases is simply known as skin cancer which is life threatening.

Anyone can experience skin sunburn due to overexposing the skin to the suns harmful rays. Fair skinned people with lighter hair and eye color, freckles and a genetic history of skin conditions are the most susceptible to get sunburned as their bodies produce much less melanin. Treatment

If the skin has been burned and the pain is very severe, acetaminophen and ibuprofen will help to relieve the pain. Anaesthetic creams and sprays containing lidocaine and benzocaine should be applied to the burned area of skin, this reduce the inflammation, pain and provides a cooling effect. To prevent further infection of the burned skin use antibacterial soaps and antiseptics. The most important thing to remember is that the skin is extremely dehydrated and dry so drink lots of water and apply water based moisturisers that will prevent the skin from further tightening and drying out. 100 % Aloe Vera is a fantastic re-hydrating and cooling cream.
